Enigma was deciphered in Wielkopolska

The first successful attempts to break codes of the German cipher machine Enigma started in Wielkopolska where long before the outbreak of the 2nd World War officers of the Polish Armed Forces gave up old linguistic methods and relied on mathematics.

History

Enigma – A German electro-mechanical cipher machine working on the basis of rotating rotors, patented by Arthur Scherbius in 1918. For the first time cryptograms encoded with the Enigma were successfully deciphered by Polish cryptologists in 1932.

Polish version of the exhibition “Enigma – Decipher Victory”, prepared by the Marshal Office of the Wielkopolska Region and first displayed in the Senate (the Upper House of the Polish Parliament) on 17 October 2013, was made accessible free of charge to inhabitants of the neighboring Kujawsko-Pomorskie region. Until 24 April 2013 it will be displayed in Bydgoszcz, the home town of Marian Rejewski – the leader of three Polish cryptologists.

The Italian version of an exhibition "Enigma. Decifrare una Vittoria" (Enigma. Decipher Victory) devoted to the Polish mathematicians who broke the codes of a German encrypting machine, Enigma, earns more and more popularity among the cities of the Italian Peninsula. On 18th November this year, a solemn inauguration of the exhibition took place in the Exhibition Room of the Office for the City of Latina, located in Casa Del Combattente.

“Enigma – Decipher Victory” exhibition was one of the main events of the international science conference devoted to the future of military cryptology. The event was prepared by the Military University of Technology under the honorary patronage of the Minister of National Defense. It was organized on 7 November 2012 in order to commemorate the 80th anniversary of breaking the system of codes of the German encrypting machine, Enigma, by Polish cryptologists.

Exhibition

The display organised by the Marshal of the Wielkopolska Region presents achievements of Polish mathematicians in breaking of the Enigma’s ciphers. It recalls a tragic history of those who thanks to their knowledge and skills contributed to saving of many millions of lives during the 2nd World War. The display is composed of 23 boards arranged in the form of a labyrinth.
